FAQ

Every web developer knows that it's a huge problem to protect your code from stealing. You can only make a thief's life harder using minifies, encoders, and obfuscators, but let's be honest - it's impossible to prevent front-end code theft. Usually, we don't even know that our code was stolen until we found it in some other product.

Same problem with any text content. The only difference is that in this case, you might eventually be able to find the stolen copy in a Google search.

We cannot prevent theft technically, but we can detect it and intimidate a thief.

Our service is similar to a car alarm: you can't prevent theft, you can only complicate it, or install a beacon to find the car and come there with the police. We offer a similar beacon, only for your web product/website/texts.

Our beacon looks like an emoji. So you additionally get an emoji pack for your website. But our product is not just a tracking image, but a set of measures to confirm the authorship of your page, as well as disrupt the work of a stolen copy or a legitimate request for its removal.

Is it free?

No. Everybody likes to eat sometimes, and we too. SnitchJS is not free to use, you should buy a license to use it.

Is it legal?

Yes. We don't get any user data until the code is not stolen. We're just recommending you to write a statement which does not allow using parts of your code without permission into your license agreement.

In which products can I use your service?

In almost any web product that has HTML output 🙂. Use it in your articles and texts, in WordPress (or any other CMS) theme or plugin, in plain HTML templates that have no backend, in web apps, and so on.

What will happen if I do not extend the License?

Nothing will be deleted, and the service will continue to collect data on thefts as before. You simply won't have access to this data until you renew your license.

Can SnitchJS code be found by searching my domain in the source code?

No. Your trusted domain names are encrypted and cannot be found by a simple search through the code.

Does SnitchJS send some requests that can increase page loading time?

No. It sends a request only if the code was executed on a non-trusted domain.

Also, our JS code is minified and weighs less than 1kB, so it doesn't affect Page Speed Insights results.

I'm afraid I won't be able to handle installing the code.

The installation is extremely simple and you don't need to have any coding skills. You simply copy-paste a short piece of code and paste it into your article or HTML/JavaScript code.

Do you have a non-JS solution?

Yes. We have the option to protect the content by including only the tracking image - no JavaScript code is needed at all! In this case, you just need to add an image to your text or code. But keep in mind that in this case the "Break stolen copy" or "Alert that the copy is stolen" features will not work. But you still be able to detect new thefts, get a thief's contacts, generate a DMCA, and so on.

Can you help me with SnitchJS code installation?

The installation of our service code is really easy - you basically simply copy-paste just a few lines of JavaScript code and one line of HTML. But if you have some issues with the installation - please, contact us and we will help!

How can I test that the service works?

Our app has a built-in installation checker. When the installation check is complete, open your protected product and copy it, as the thief will do. Copy the article text or save a .html page. Then publish it on some other domain or simply open it in your PC web browser! You will see a new theft on our app's "Thefts" page. That will mean that the script works correctly.

Is jQuery needed?

No. SnitchJS runs on pure JavaScript and does not require jQuery.

Is it possible that my website will be flagged as malicious because of usage of your service?

We always check our code using antivirus programs and malware-checking services. You can be sure that our code will not be marked as malware.

Are you a lawsuit company?

No. We're just making you able to detect theft, get contacts for communication with thieves or a website owner/hosting, and help you prepare DMCA document. However, we do not provide any lawsuit services or consultations.

SnitchJS vs Copyscape and other anti-plagiarism services.

You may ask about the difference between our service and other anti-plagiarism services. Most other services search web pages and compare the original with the copy. With this approach, copies may not be found for a long time or not be found at all. Also, the copy may be changed and not be identified as plagiarism. Our service notifies you immediately as soon as the copy has been posted on a third-party resource. Also, our service is more likely to continue working in the case of serious changes to the copy (for example, an HTML template adapted by a thief).
